Parul Pandya Dhar

Parul Pandya Dhar is Associate Professor of Art History at the Department of History, University of Delhi. Her work engages with ancient Indian sculpture and architecture, and early Asian interactions, especially the architecture and iconography of cross-cultural exchange between South and Southeast Asia.

She has authored The Toraṇa in Indian and Southeast Asian Architecture (2010), edited Indian Art History: Changing Perspectives (2011) and co-edited Asian Encounters: Exploring Connected Histories (with Upinder Singh, forthcoming) and Cultural Interface of India with Asia: Religion, Art and Architecture (2004), besides papers on Indian art historiography, architectural history, and artistic exchange in ancient Asia. An alumnus of Kalakshetra, Chennai, she is rooted in the theory and practice of Indian performing and visual arts, and has been a noted Bharatanatyam artiste, an aspect that deeply influences her academic work. In 2007-08, she was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the Freie Universitæt, Berlin, and also the Nehru Trust research grant, London, in 2004.
